We’re live with the first issue of the Origins magazine!  It is a quarterly magazine for parents and soon-to-be parents who are lost in the confusion of contradicting advice and for parents on the hunt for healthier options for food, beauty, and hygiene products.  Hit “Expand” to read the magazine.

A HUGE thank you goes out to Melissa Jean of Melissa Jean Photography for contributing to this issue!

I’m looking for future contributors and stories, so if you read this issue and feel like you have something to share email me.  I’m already working on ideas for the next issue!

If you or someone you know is expecting and is interested in maternity or newborn photography, contact me using the contact form or send me an email.  The first weeks are so important!  For more information on when to have a newborn session, read this blog post.

RTC PhotoWork: Photoshop Friday—Lightroom4 Review

So Adobe Lightroom 4 has been released.  You’re wondering if it’s worth it to upgrade or if it’s worth it to try Lightroom at all.  This is my review after using the beta for the last month—along with a few tips.

Full disclosure, I’ve been on the original version of Lightroom for the last few years aside from using betas and trial versions of Lightroom 2 and Lightroom 3.  I’m definitely considering buying Lightroom 4 after using the beta for the last month.  The bulk of my time was spent working with the local adjustments feature.

My overall thoughts on Lightroom 4:

  •   Lightroom 4 handles big exposure changes better than previous versions. You can add several stops of light to a raw image with lower amounts of grain than previous versions.

RTC PhotoWork: Copyrights, Photography, and the Digital Age

I remember being in high school and hearing kids talk about burning CD’s.  It was the hayday of Napster,  but consumers ignoring copyright didn’t begin with the digital age.  I mean, I remember putting cassette tapes into the radio and recording my favorite songs when they were played.  The excuse of people who pirate files is, “The big bands and businesses won’t notice a few sales they lose.”  When Metallica went after Napster over all the sales they were missing out on due to free filesharing, fans cried out, “You’re just sellouts who have too much money already!”  It’s not far from what people say now about software companies like Adobe, “Maybe they shouldn’t cost so much in the first place.  If they were more affordable, we might pay for it.”  I’ve even heard of professionals making such claims, trying to find every work-around to the high cost of editing software—even attempting to get the student discount because they have a kindergartener!  Come on, we know a 5 year old isn’t going to be using Photoshop or Illustrator, right?

Needless to say, our society is ok with stealing….but it isn’t ok.  We get up in arms when someone steals physical property from a store or individual, but the only people who care about intellectual property (art that can be digitized primarily) are those who create it.  It’s so easy to steal it, so why not?

RTC PhotoWork: Dance Session at Fort Worth Water Gardens Part 1

This post has been a LOOOOONG time coming.  I hope to do another session like it with Holly, so that we can really nail the choreography meets photography gig.  Holly and I go back, way back, to high school.  Let me tell you.  This girl can dance!  Sit back, put on some tunes, and check her out dancing at the Fort Worth Water Gardens.

RTC PhotoWork: Independence Day in Watauga

Can you believe July is almost over?  Ack!  Don’t tell the landlord!  haha  Here are a few snapshots I took on July 4th this year at my parents’ house of the kids in their pool.  And, yep, at 4ish months postpartum my sister and I both got in swimsuits to get in with the kids!  It was too hot not to!

Had to start off with my little guy, who at this point was hanging out with Grandma while I took a few shots of my niece and nephews.

Gotta love the blues of the pool bottom reflecting into Matthew’s eyes!

Miss Madison…I remember when she was swimming for the second summer.  What a difference!  Maybe I will share that photo sometime!  (hmmm…or put it in a book for my sister on a holiday…shhh!  Don’t tell her!)

Ah, yes, the dynamic duo…and by dynamic I really mean, “Madison first wrapped her arm all the way around his neck to knock him down in the shot before this one.”  It’s ok; they have sweet moments like this.

Matthew in a pool for the second time ever…I love this one and how you can see how he enjoys floating in the water.  That’s complete trust right there, too.

This has got to be my favorite photo of Colton ever.  Look at those eyes!

The photo which everyone preferred in color!  With all those blues, how couldn’t you?  (I still like the black and white, but maybe it would stand out in a tighter crop?)

Speaking of black and white photos, here’s my little dude again.  Tristan hanging out with Grandma.

What a different summer this one has been!  And the family gatherings on Independence Day weekend were so much fun I didn’t have the camera out near as much as I had planned (hoped?).  I did attempt fireworks photos, but those can come at a later time.

Did you take any photos over the holiday?  Have you had the chance to upload them somewhere?  Post a link in the comments; I would love to check them out!
